As an artist who paints, designs and dances, I’m constantly looking for ways to have each discipline influence the other. Developing this series of work scratched that itch for me.
With this collection I explored ideas of dance in paint, through the lens of underwater creatures. Their fluid movements through the water, the delicate rippling of fins, invertebrate bodies swirling around rocks or prey - all of these sea dances I wanted to celebrate in paint.
I included both realistic renderings and abstract recreations, sometimes drawing directly from what I observed and other times taking elements to create new “choreography” in my compositions. I approached each piece in a similar fashion to choreography and performance. And as with all my work, I play with color and natural pattern throughout the collection.
