Mushrooms are one of my favorite subjects to explore, both in nature and in paint. The colors, patterns and variety of forms keep me always on the lookout during hikes. And there's an element of magic to them; they seem to occupy a space between plant and animal.

I was hiking in North Carolina when I spotted this gorgeous turkey tail. The bright white fungus with a brilliant purple edging and delicate lines captured me and I knew I wanted to paint this tiny form in a large scale. The layers of the mushroom come one after the other like waves and soften in focus as they move back into space.

This painting absolutely alive with color, fantastic detail and movement.
